KKN Gurugram Desk | Patna is set to receive a major transportation boost with the inauguration of ‘s first double-decker on June 11, 2025. This multi-layered bridge will not only enhance the flow of traffic but will also provide much-needed relief to the city’s overburdened roadways. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will officially inaugurate the much-anticipated double-decker bridge, marking a significant milestone in Patna’s infrastructure development.

What is the Double-Decker Bridge Project?

The newly constructed double-decker bridge in Patna is designed to address the growing traffic congestion in the city, particularly on Ashok Rajpath. With the bridge’s completion, vehicles will be able to travel across three layers, offering an innovative solution to the city’s traffic woes. The bridge will serve as a crucial link between Ashok Rajpath, PMCH (Patna Medical College and Hospital), Patna University, and the Science College areas.

This double-decker bridge is not only the first of its kind in Bihar but is also part of a broader urban planning initiative aimed at transforming Patna’s infrastructure. The multi-tiered bridge will facilitate smooth transportation, benefiting daily commuters, , medical staff, and people alike.

Key Features of the Double-Decker Bridge

The double-decker bridge will feature two main decks (layers) of travel, in addition to the metro system that is under construction. The lower deck (Tier 1) will span 1.45 kilometers, connecting Patna College Main Gate to BN College Main Gate. Meanwhile, the upper deck (Tier 2) will cover 2.2 kilometers, extending from the Carriage Chowk to the Patna University Gate (Shatabdi Dwar) and Patna Science College.

The project also includes a service road that will run parallel to the main bridge, with approximately 90% of its construction already completed. This new infrastructure will ensure a smooth flow of traffic and help alleviate congestion in busy areas like Ashok Rajpath, PMCH, Patna University, and Science College.

Improving Traffic Flow and Reducing Congestion

One of the most significant advantages of the double-decker bridge is the reduction in traffic pressure around key areas such as Ashok Rajpath, PMCH, and Patna University. The bridge will effectively divert traffic away from busy routes, offering alternative, efficient routes for commuters. By connecting JP Ganga Path (Patna River Front Road) with Krishna Ghat, it will create a seamless alternative to the existing routes, particularly relieving the pressure on Gandhi Setu and other connecting roads.

This development is particularly important for students, medical patients, professionals, and everyday citizens who travel through these areas regularly. The new infrastructure will significantly reduce travel time and ensure smoother commutes for the city’s residents.

Moreover, the bridge will connect to other ongoing projects in Patna, including the Patna Metro Rail project, road improvements over the Bakarganj Nala, and the proposed multi-level car parking at PMCH. These interconnected projects aim to provide a holistic solution to Patna’s transportation and parking challenges.

Boosting Patna’s Urban Mobility and Future Prospects

The construction of the double-decker bridge is a clear indicator of Patna’s growing urban mobility infrastructure. The project is not just an isolated development; it is part of a broader vision to modernize Patna’s transportation network. The integration of the double-decker bridge with the Patna Metro will further strengthen the city’s connectivity and ease of movement.

As the bridge opens to the public, it will provide a reliable and faster route for people commuting within the city, helping to reduce dependence on traditional road networks that often experience severe congestion, especially during peak hours.

This project is also an essential component of the city’s larger urban planning initiatives, which include modernizing the city’s public transport system and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents.

Impact on Students, Healthcare, and Local Businesses

The newly built double-decker bridge will have a significant impact on several key sectors, including education, healthcare, and commerce. For students traveling to Patna University and Science College, the new infrastructure will drastically reduce the time taken to commute. Students will no longer face the daily challenge of navigating through heavy traffic, ensuring they arrive at their institutions on time and with less stress.

Similarly, medical patients visiting PMCH, one of the oldest and most renowned medical colleges and hospitals in India, will benefit from smoother and faster transportation. This will ensure timely access to medical services, which is crucial for those in need of emergency care.

For local businesses, this project will improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and enhance accessibility to different parts of the city. As a result, businesses will see improved logistics, faster deliveries, and a better flow of customers, contributing to the overall economic development of the region.

Connection to Patna Metro and Future Infrastructure Projects

The double-decker bridge is strategically linked to the ongoing Patna Metro project. As part of the city’s modern public transport system, the metro will provide seamless connectivity to various parts of the city, including areas now serviced by the double-decker bridge. This connection will make Patna’s public transport system more integrated, offering commuters multiple travel options and ensuring more efficient use of the city’s transportation network.

In addition, the project’s integration with the Bakarganj Nala road and the multi-level car parking at PMCH will reduce the pressure on existing roads and help manage the city’s growing population and vehicle numbers. These infrastructure improvements are essential as Patna continues to expand and modernize in line with its growing economic and population needs.

The inauguration of Bihar’s first double-decker bridge is a major achievement for Patna and its residents. This project not only addresses the current traffic issues but also sets the stage for a more efficient, modern, and interconnected transportation system in the city. With better traffic flow, reduced congestion, and improved connectivity to key areas, the double-decker bridge will play a crucial role in shaping Patna’s urban landscape.

The collaboration between various departments, urban planners, and engineers has brought this ambitious project to fruition, and it is a testament to the city’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens. With this new development, Patna is taking significant steps towards becoming a more accessible, efficient, and sustainable city for future generations.
